Optional Manufacturing and Finishing

Most parts are formed to net shape and require no secondary machining, but MPP can perform a variety of optional manufacturing and finishing operations to provide additional complexity and precision or to enhance the performance properties of your part. In fact, MPP's secondary manufacturing and finishing capabilities are among the most extensive in the powder metallurgy industry. By offering these extensive secondary capabilities, MPP can provide complete "to print" service.

Generally, secondary operations are be performed to improve:

  • Density
  • Strength
  • Shape
  • Corrosion Resistance
  • Tolerances

MPP's restriking operations include:

  • Repressing (increases density; improves mechanical properties and dimensional control)
  • Sizing (improves dimensional accuracy and surface finish)
  • Coining (reshapes or embosses the component; improves dimensional accuracy and surface finish)

MPP's thermal treatments include:

  • Annealing (improves ductility, elongation, impact resistance, and soft magnetic properties)
  • Heat Treatment (improves tensile and yield strengths, hardness, wear resistance, and fatigue strength)
  • Stress Relief/Draw/Temper (relieves stresses that are caused by quenching; improves ductility and fracture toughness; transforms to tempered martensite)
  • Steam Treatment (improves compression strength, surface hardness, corrosion resistance, pressure tightness, and sealing)
  • Induction Hardening

MPP's surface treatments include:

  • Deburring
  • Plating
  • Coating
  • Passivation

MPP's machining techniques include:

  • Turning
  • Milling
  • Drilling
  • Tapping
  • Grinding
  • Reaming/Boring
  • Honing

MPP's powder metallurgy fastening & joining techniques include:

  • Mechanical and adhesive joining
  • Welding
  • Sinter bonding and sinter brazing
  • Assembly (of dissimilar materials)

Other MPP secondary operations include oil impregnation (for lubrication), plastic and resin impregnation (to improve machinability, pressure tightness, and plating finish), and Teflon® coating (to improve lubricity and wear characteristics).

Optional manufacturing/finishing is just one of the subjects that are covered in MPP's highly acclaimed Powder Metallurgy Design Seminars. For more information on how you can attend a free Design Seminar, click here.
